The common cold is a viral infection of the nose and throat (upper respiratory tract), which can be caused by many types of viruses. Children under the age of 6 are at the highest risk of catching colds, but even otherwise healthy adults can expect to catch two or three colds a year. Most people recover within a week or 10 days, but some viruses can take up to three weeks to fully recover. People who smoke also take longer to cure colds. If your symptoms do not improve within this time, see a doctor.

Symptoms

Symptoms of the common cold usually occur 1-3 days after exposure to the virus that causes the common cold. Signs and symptoms include:

  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Slight pain in the body
  • Mild headache
  • Sneezing
  • Heat
  • General malaise

During the course of a cold, runny nose may become more profuse and yellow or green in colour.

Causes

Although colds can be caused by different types of viruses, the most common culprit is rhinoviruses. The cold virus enters your body through your mouth, eyes or nose. The virus can spread through droplets in the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or even just talks. Viruses can also be spread through direct physical contact with an infected person or infected objects. If you touch your nose, mouth or eyes after such contact or exposure, you are likely to catch a cold.

Complications

A cold can lead to many complications, including:

  • Acute ear infection - this occurs when bacteria or viruses enter the space behind the eardrum. Typical signs and symptoms include ear pain and, in some cases, a green or yellow runny nose or the return of fever after a common cold.
  • Asthma - a cold can trigger an asthma attack.
  • Acute sinusitis - a common cold that does not resolve after 10 days (in both children and adults) can lead to inflammation and infection of the sinuses.
  • Other secondary infections - these include streptococcal pharyngitis (streptococcal pharyngitis) or laryngitis (laryngitis or croup), pneumonia, and bronchitis and bronchiolitis in children.

Does having a cold have anything to do with exposure to cold weather?

Although the common cold usually occurs during the winter months, cold weather does not cause colds in itself. During the cold months, people spend more time around each other and indoors, which makes it easier for the virus to spread. For the same reason, children in kindergarten and school are particularly vulnerable to the common cold. Low humidity in the colder months also contributes to the higher prevalence of the common cold, as many viruses survive better in low-humidity conditions.

The difference between the common cold and flu?

Influenza, caused by influenza viruses, also spreads and causes illness at about the same time as the common cold. As these two diseases have very similar symptoms, it is difficult to tell the difference between them on the basis of these alone. However, in general flu symptoms are worse than those of a cold and may include feeling hot/clammy, cough, sore throat, runny or blocked nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and tiredness.

How can we limit or prevent colds and flu ?

It is very difficult to prevent colds altogether, but the following measures can help prevent infection:

  • Avoid too close contact with people who already have a cold - especially in the first few days of infection, as this is when they spread the infection fastest.
  • Washing hands after coming into contact with a person with a cold or touching an object that has been touched by a person with a cold. If a child has a cold, clean their toys after playing with them.
  • Keep your fingers away from your nose and mouth, otherwise you can get infected with viral particles that can be picked up very quickly from the air.
  • In the bathroom, separate towels for healthy and cold people.
  • Keep an eye on the humidity of your environment so that your sinuses don't dry out.

If you're unlucky enough to catch a cold anyway, here are some ways you can alleviate your symptoms:

  • Herbs, minerals and other similar products such as American straw (echinacea), eucalyptus, garlic, honey, lemon, menthol, zinc and vitamin C. All these things have been getting a lot of publicity for some time as a kind of cure for the common cold, but unconfirmed by scientific studies.
  • Adequate fluid intake. This helps prevent drying of the mucous membranes of the nose and throat, which keeps mucus moist.
  • Avoid coffee, alcohol and soft drinks containing caffeine. Alcohol and caffeine lead to dehydration, which is the opposite of what the body needs to recover.
  • If you are a smoker, try to limit or reduce your smoking, at least until you feel better. In general, avoid other smokers as inhaling cigarette smoke irritates the throat even more and leads to coughing.

How an air ioniser helps fight colds, flu and bronchitis

Humans are often the most common source of airborne diseases. When someone sneezes or coughs, tiny droplets of water or mucus (filled with viruses or bacteria) disperse and easily enter the lungs. This is the main reason why people get sick in the first place. Even without coughing or sneezing, germs can travel up to 6 metres away from an infected person. Some viruses can even stay in the air for several hours.

Crowded places with poor air circulation (public transport, offices, etc.) also facilitate the spread of colds, flu and other diseases. Research shows that air flow and ventilation can have a major impact on how diseases spread indoors. The lower the air flow and circulation, the greater the likelihood of spreading the disease.

The IONEX air ioniser has a wide range of proven health-improving effects, including preventing the spread of airborne infections. By intensively adding negative ions to the air, bacteria and viruses bind to them, resulting in a significant reduction in colds and cold-related illnesses - flu, strep throat and coughs.

In the case of colds and flu, it is all about prevention, as negative ions remove all bacteria and viruses from the air (which are the main causes of colds and flu) and deposit them on the ground or nearby surfaces. Ionised bacteria and viruses can no longer rise from the ground and consequently cannot get into our lungs where they would be dangerous. Of course, an ioniser is also effective if we have already caught a cold. In this case, inhaling directly at the carbon brush (or directly at the ioniser) helps, as regeneration is faster. Negative ions improve the body's defence mechanism and the cell's biocolumn, i.e. the cell's vitality. In addition, our airways (both upper and lower) open up, mucous membranes loosen up and the nose unclogs. The mucus that has accumulated in the respiratory tract is more easily expelled and, after a few days of regular inhalation, the symptoms of a cold disappear. The picture below shows the basic operation of an ioniser (air purification function) - just as negative ions remove harmful PM particles, they naturally remove all the bacteria and viruses that cause colds and flu.

Interesting fact - scientific research

Dr. A. P. Wehner developed aerosol ioniser electrotherapy in the USA, which has been successfully used to treat a wide range of conditions - bronchitis, asthma, colds and allergies. The Faculty of Biology and Human Health at Surrey studied the effects of ionisation in thousands of people who used an ioniser over a long period of time. The results show improvements in all respiratory and bronchial diseases. Dr. Palti found that large amounts of positive ions (impurities) cause bronchial spasms in children, while negative ions reduce and even eliminate them completely. In general, children react surprisingly quickly to an ionised atmosphere. There are many reports of children's colds and bronchitis cured after a single night in an ioniser. The response of the elderly is a little slower, but there are cases of cure after only one or two nights of use of the ioniser.

Other benefits of the ioniser

As well as preventing colds and flu, an air ioniser has many other benefits. Among others, it purifies the air better than any other fan-powered air purifier; it naturally lowers histamine, thus solving the problems of allergy sufferers, asthmatics and hypertensives (the aim is to eliminate symptoms completely and permanently); it lowers stress hormones; it regulates the thyroid gland and strengthens the immune system. All this without any unwanted side effects on the body.

The advantage of the IONEX compared to other air ionisers

One of the drawbacks of other ionisers is that they emit harmful ozone, which irritates the lungs. This applies to those types of ionisers that produce negative ions using metal needles, membranes or plasma. In addition, they are usually loud (due to the fan) and large. However, the IONEX ioniser with its patented carbon brush is the only one on the market that never emits harmful ozone during its long lifetime (more than 10 years). The IONEX Ioniser is the result of Slovenian development and innovation, which has been delighting users all over the world for many years.
